I’m ripping off Klosterman tonight… I’m sitting here listening to Don Cherry talk about how lazy Europeans are and I’m ripping off Chuck Klosterman. On the radio in the background is come obscure pop music from well before my time introduced by Randy Bachman on his CBC show Vinyl Tap. I spent the day listening to CBC. On DNTO they had a show about Vancouver that only made me want to live in Vancouver until I heard Joel Plaskett’s performance from Q on Atlantic Airwaves and was reminded of how much I like it here as well.
Fuckin’ Can-con, man.
So we hosted the ECMAs… that was pretty neat. It was sorta like Harvest Jazz and Blues but with way less tents and way less middle aged drunk Frederictonians. Lines were longer… music was louder. I, like many I’m sure, didn’t see anywhere near the number of acts as I wanted to. It would have been nice to see The Sleepless Nights once over the weekend… The Fussy Part, Joel Plaskett, Shotgun Jimmie, a longer Julie Doiron set… maybe Jill Barber, Great Plains, Rebekah Higgs…
Anyway… it was good. It was essentially what I wish Harvest was except it’s way too cold to adequately appreciate it. They should hold it in the spring or summer. It was also, if I may pull out the soapbox, way too fucking loud. I like a good loud show but what I saw at the Capital on Saturday night at 2am was ridiculous. I had to plug my ears despite being quite accustomed to loud volumes. I think it was likely borderline negligent.
Wintersleep at the Elks Club was phenominal… I won’t go into too many details about the show but it was really nice to get back into that place. They played for about 2 hours. Hearing people demand to hear “Orca” at the Elks Club took me back, for sure. It was easily the highlight of the weekend, second only to the remarkable irony of accidentally walking into a Jens Jeppeson performance at the Lunar Rogue later that night because it was the only place in the city with enough room for 6-8 people to sit.
It was also nice to have friends Roger and Darcy visit from Halifax and partake in some Rock Band. Roger even participated in some Real Band taking up the bass for a few Piper Perabo classics at Friday’s practice. We had breakfast at the Sunshine Diner on Sunday (and abused the ECMA free shuttles to get back home), and I watched a slightly altered incarnation (a few obviously glaring ommissions, geh geh geh) of the History Crew drunkenly amble downtown brandishing giant icesicles as weapons on Saturday night. Did Courtney throw up on Matty B? Where did Michelle and Mike disappear to? Did Courtney just say “I don’t want to be the next Heath Ledger of history!”? Did Matty B just buy a round of Jager shots? Did Don just buy a round of Jager shots?
Yeah, quality weekend.
And on top of it all, last night I played in the basement of a house in what felt like the fucking Rocky Mountains except it was just off Sunset drive during the middle of an insane snow squall, -25 wind chills, and 6 foot high snow banks. So, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to sitting on the couch in my long johns and Canadiens shirt watching the Habs battle the Flyers with Team Canada’s own Cassie Campbell running colour commentary…
…and THAT colour don’t run.
That’s awful, I apologize. Did you know cbc.ca/sports streams HNIC games online? They do! Rogers be damned!

Hey guess what, you can get CBC in Vancouver too. Which means you can listen to Joel Plaskett. While you get ready to go outside with shorts on instead of pants. Because it’s gorgeous and the shrubs are blossoming and it’s amazing and everyone has that great springtime glow and February is only half-done.
Anyway, Enjoy the Maritime March and April months for me!!
